The start is on the six-lane Strasse des 17. Juni near "Kleiner Stern" and finishes near the Brandenburg Gate. The route is traffic-free, extremely flat and very fast and was host to Paul Tergat's world record run of 2:04:55 in 2003.
The start is 35 m above sea level and the finishing line is 34.5 m above sea level, the highest point being 54.3 m above sea level in Dahlem.
Over 60 bands and 1 million spectators lining the streets create an incredibly stimulating atmosphere all along the route.

Race Timing in the Real Berlin Marathon is via the Real-Time-Championchip timing method. The fee for the timing chip is €31.00 (€25.00 deposit + €6.00 hiring charge), for which you will be given a receipt. When you leave the running area after picking up your race number you will be given a timing chip in exchange for the receipt. The chip must be returned by 5pm on the day of the race in order to have your deposit of €25.00 refunded. If the chip is not returned it will be assumed that you have purchased it.
Along the route, signs have been posted to mark every kilometre covered, as well as the mile and five mile points. Large clocks giving the current time are located every 5 km
The race numbers will be issued at the BERLIN VITAL marathon fair from 25 to 27 September, 2008 upon presentation of the registration confirmation. Alternatively you can have somebody pick it up for you provided they show the original confirmation of entry. Each participant will also receive a clothing bag and a sponge. Registration confirmations will be mailed to participants in mid-August irrespective of when the registration form was received.
NO RACE NUMBERS WILL BE ISSUED ON SUNDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER 2008 (the day of the race).
There are no pace setters for this event.
Refreshments will be available at the 5 km mark and starting at the 10 km mark, every 2.5 km.
You can take your own drinks and have them put out at the drink stations. They need to be dropped off at the information centre at the start of the race no later then 7:30am. Please note that they may be extremely difficult to find during the race due to the number of runners.
You can buy Berlin public transport (BVG) tickets at the marathon exhibition. Only “dropouts” can travel back to the starting area free on the day of the race, their race numbers doubling as tickets.
All finishers who complete the race inside the cut-off time will receive a certificate and a medal. In early December, a personal certificate with the time and placing, as well as a result list will be automatically sent by mail.
