2008 is an "UP" run starting at sea level in the centre of the harbour city of Durban, and finishes in Pietermaritzburg. The distance is approximately 89kms and this will be confirmed in the final race instructions.

The entry fee for the Comrades Marathon is AU$170, which is non-refundable. Entries for this event close on 5 May 2008 and all competitors must be 20 years of age on the day of the race.
NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
The entry fee includes: special runner's package; viewing of the route by coach; a visit to the Comrades Marathon House and Museum; entry to the foreign competitors area at the Comrades Experience as well as race brochure and map. You will receive a postcard, email or fax from the Comrades Marathon Association confirming receipt of your entry and indicating your race number and start batch.
It is your personal responsibility to check this card to confirm that your details have been accurately captured. You must produce this card together with your chip in order to collect your race number.
All entrants must qualify by completing an officially recognised race according to the following table during the period 13 June 2007 to 5 May 2008 (as per the table below). A copy of the results must be shown as proof.

Runners are also seeded according to their qualifying times. note: The Comrades Marathon has strict rules as to what may be worn during the race, and also regarding competitors receiving outside assistance during the race. Please ensure that you check with us about what you intend to take with you prior to setting off.
The Comrades Marathon starts at 5:30am at the City Hall in Durban.
You must retire at 17h00 (12 hour limit) wherever you are on the course. Additionally, there are cut-off points throughout the race which must be met.

All runners will be timed using the ChampionChip timing method.
You must register at the International Runners Area at the MTN Comrades Marathon Experience in Durban. There you will receive your race numbers, courtesy bag and brochure containing your final instructions. All runners MUST provide proof of identity in order to collect their numbers e.g. ID books, Passport or Driver's License.

There are no pace setters in the Comrades Marathon
There are 51 refreshment tables along the route containing Coca-Cola, PowerAde electrolyte drink and water. Certain tables will offer Marie biscuits, orange segments, bananas, cooked potatoes and energy bars. A sponge is provided in your courtesy bag and fresh sponges will be available at 2 points on the course. Each aid station will contain a trough to be used for sponging that will contained sterilised water.
Personal refreshments cannot be left at any of the aid stations. A tog bag service is available to take personal belongings to the finish.
For people staying in Pietermaritzburg there are buses to the start in Durban and from the finish in Pietermaritzburg returning to Durban after the race.

The average June temperature in Durban is between 10.5°C and 26°C (51°F to 79°F) The average June temperature in Pietermaritzburg is between 3°C and 24°C (37°F to 75°F) It is mid-Winter at this time of year but the days are usually clear.
