The Venice Marathon
28 October 2007

EUROPE

SPOIL YOURSELF IN THE CITY OF CANALS

Running from Strat on the mainland, over the Liberty Bridge and through St Mark's Square, this is one of Europe's most beautiful races. With the history of Venice beneath your feet, every step will take you closer to the centre of one of the most famous and most photographed cities in the world

Travelling Fit has accommodation and Marathon entry packages from as little as EUR €215.

Whilst in Venice, why not take a look at some of the other world famous attratctions (either as a tourist or as you run by).

The Grand Canal (Canalazzo)
Venice's main waterway splits the city in half. It is the hub around which much activity in Venice is concentrated and is encircled with elegant facades of the palazzi, which testify to the city's past opulence. The best way to explore the architectural splendour of these Renaissance buildings is on board a vaporetta (a motorised Gondola)

St Mark's Square
St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) has always been the nucleus of Venice. The first citadel and church were erected on its stony foundations, the Palazzo Ducale and the Basilica di San Marco respectively. Travellers and pigeons flock to the Piazza with equal zeal. It is the tourists however who pay to eat or drink at the elegant cafes that spill onto the pavements.

The Rialto Bridge
The Rialto has long been the commercial core of Venice and is famed as the place where the first bridge over the Grand Canal was built. The original wooden bridge collapsed under the strain of the crowds gathered here to admire a wedding procession and it was replaced by the sturdier single stone arch bridge

in 1588. Today the area still resembles the bustling fruit and vegetable market of former times.

The Singapore Marathon
2 December 2007

ASIA

UNIQUELY SINGAPORE
ONE OF THE JEWELS OF ASIA

Billed as one of the most beautiful in the world, the new course is shaded by trees and fringes the East Coast Parkway for much of the way. Starting at the Esplanade Bridge, the flat, shaded and scenic course will take the runners through some of the most historical sites of Singapore, along the picturesque East Coast Park coastal route, through the Business District of Shenton Way and finish at the Padang. Only a few hours from Australia Singapore and the Singapore Marathon are perfect for that Christmas Break, indulgent shopping spree or well deserved break.

Singapore is much more than a City State however. Why not spend a few nights there and experience some of the othere gems that are on offer

The Night Safari
As the sun sets, a different world comes to life. At the Night Safari, you can look a rhinoceros in the eye, hear the howls of a pack of striped hyenas or watch giraffes glide serenely across the plain in the still of the night. This premier night zoo houses over 900 animals of 135 exotic species in eight zones re-created to simulate geographic zones like the Southeast Asian rainforest, African savanna, Nepalese river valley, South American pampas and Burmese jungle. Strike out on your own along the walking trail or relax in a tram ride - whichever you choose, Night Safari is a wild adventure not to be missed.

Orchard Road
For shopping, Orchard Road is the ideal place to spend a day. The bustling shopping centres sell everything from the most fashionable and outrageous shoes and clothes to precious gems, eye wear and accessories. And when the shopping gets a little exhausting, revitalise yourself at one of the many restaurants and eating outlets.

Little India
This modest but colourful area of wall-to-wall shops, pungent aromas and Hindi film music is a relief from the prim modernity of many parts of the city. Centred around the southern end of Serangoon Rd, this is the place to come to pick up that framed print of a Hindu god you've always wanted, eat great vegetarian food and watch streetside cooks fry chapatis. The Zhujiao Centre is the main market, but there are also interesting spice shops nearby. The best temples are Veerama Kali Ammam, Sri Srinivasa Perumal and the glitzy Temple of 1000 Lights
