There are not many harbours in the world that can boast the clear waters and reefs of those found in Port Vila, Vanuatu and Iririki Island, nestling in the Harbour just 350 metres offshore from Port Vila Town provides a natural and inviting challenge for any swimmer.
Simply to swim across from the town to the Island Jetty, or to swim around the island, or the 'big one', to swim the 3.2Km from the Rossi Restaurant around the Island and back to the Rossi. The challenge was taken up occasionally by locals and resident expats, among them Port Vila businessman and avid ocean swimmer Gary Stevens who helped popularise the swim around the island. Sadly, Gary is no longer with us but his memory lives on in The Gary "The Bean" Stevens Trophy awarded to the first Male & Female Vanuatu Resident Finishers at the Vanuatu Ocean Swim.
The inaugural swim (known then as the Rossi to Rossi Swim) was held in 2002 when 39 swimmers took part in the 3.2Km and 7 in the 1.5Km.They came from Australia, New Caledonia & Vanuatu. In recent years, the event has grown to include over 200 swimmers annually.
The main event in the Vanuatu Open Water Swim is the Rossi to Rossi; a diamond=shaped 3.2km swim.
There is also a 1.5km swim for those that want to participate but want to swim a shorter distance.
The Rossi to Rossi course follows a rough diamond shape from the famous Rossi Restaurant around the shore of Iririki, a beautiful wooded island nestling in picturesque Port Vila Harbour with Iririki Island Resort located on it’s north west tip. Starting at the Rossi the first 700m leg takes swimmers over a deep water channel entrance to the old inner harbour to the marker off Iririki Jetty where the course turns right through the deep water yacht moorings in the lee of Iririki, a further 800m to the South Iririki Turn Buoy which guides swimmers over the shallow reef at the Southern tip of the Island.
Here the course turns sharp right and follows the south-west shore of the Island for 1000m to the North Iririki Turn Buoy for the final 700m to the Finish back at the Rossi Restaurant
