The Shanghai Marathon has officially been announced as a candidate race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors. It is the highest-rated marathon in China and is categorised as a Platinum Label Road Race by World Athletics.
Typically held in November, the marathon features a full 42.195-kilometer course, alongside shorter races such as a 10K and a mini-marathon.
The course weaves through Shanghai’s iconic landmarks, including the Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the city’s modern skyline, offering runners a scenic and dynamic route. The event is known for its excellent organization, enthusiastic crowd support, and the city’s unique blend of traditional and modern culture.

The Course
The Shanghai Marathon course offers a scenic and dynamic route that showcases the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and modernity. Starting at the iconic Bund, the race begins with a view of Shanghai’s historic waterfront and colonial architecture. Runners then head west through the heart of the city, passing landmarks like People’s Square and Nanjing Road, a bustling commercial hub.
The course continues through central districts such as Jing’an and Changning, where modern skyscrapers stand alongside historic temples and residential neighborhoods. One of the highlights of the route is the long stretch through Century Avenue, offering wide roads and a fast, flat surface ideal for personal bests. Runners eventually cross the Nanpu Bridge, heading toward the finish line near Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District.
The Marathon route is certified by World Athletics and is well known for being flat and fast, making it a favourite among elite runners seeking record times. Along the course, participants are supported by numerous hydration stations, medical teams, and enthusiastic spectators. The blend of urban scenery, cultural landmarks, and strong logistical support makes the Shanghai Marathon course not only competitive but also visually and emotionally rewarding for all participants.

Qualifying Times
There are no qualifying times for this event, however you MUST be at least 20 years old before 31st December 2025.

There is a 6:15 hour cut-off for this event. In addition, there are various intermediate cut-offs, which are:

Clothing storage facilities will be available for all participants.
You will need to affix your bib number to the clothing back provided and leave it in the storage area prior to the race start.
Your bag can be claimed form the same storage area after the race.
