Let the magic energy of the midnight sun power you through this race.
The picturesque town of Ilulissat provides a colourful backdrop as the Icefjord Midnight Marathon winds its way through the ancient Inuit ruins of Sermermiut to the UNESCO-accredited Ilulissat Icefjord.
With ice stretching out as far as the eye can see, embark on a true trail run over rocky terrain and past impressive icebergs that glitter under nocturnal sunlight.
Please Note:
It is STRONGLY recommended that everyone arrive AT LEAST the day prior into Copenhagen so that you do not miss the connecting flight to Ilulissat via Kangerlussuaq.
In addition, it is also highly recommended that you stay at least 1 additional night in Copenhagen at the end of your trip as the flight from Ilulissat via Kangerlussuaq or Nuuk arrives at 5pm or 9pm respectively.
PACKAGE FLYERS
The Icefjord Midnight Marathon route will start and finish just outside of the historic Hotel Hvide Falk. Both marathon and half-marathoners will run the same route, but the marathon runners get the pleasure of enjoying the views twice!
There are virtually no flat sections on the run – instead, the course constantly fluctuates between mild ups and downs (generally not more than a few meters at a time). From Hotel Hvide Falk, you will follow the road for approximately 4 km through town. After climbing a wooden staircase, you then are on the ‘yellow track,’ which you will follow for approx. 3 km over hilly, rocky terrain. While the dazzling view of the icy fjord can be quite distracting, don’t forget to look where you place your feet!
Once you reach the old heliport, the yellow track turns into the ‘blue track’, and you’ll follow a wooden path into the official UNESCO World Heritage site. The wooden path only lasts for about 1 km, and then you are running on trails again. After another 2.5 km of trail, you’ll reach Holms Bakke, and turn left onto the ‘red track.’ You’ll follow the red track back up to the old heliport, and then turn right to continue back into town. The course will be well-marked by race officials, and each track is additionally permanently marked with paint circles of their respective colors.
Back in town, you’ll follow along the road and take a tour of the eastern side of Ilulissat before running 4 km up to the airport. From this point, you’ll traverse the same path back to Ilulissat. For the half-marathoners, it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump until you are back at Hotel Hvide Falk and you can take some well-deserved relaxation. The marathoners will continue on to enjoy the Icefjord and the loop a second time!

Packing for north of the Arctic Circle is all about layers. Even though it is summer, it will not be “warm” by most people’s definitions. In general, it is a good idea to have a base layer that will warm up your body (merino wool, for example), as well as a wind-protective outer layer. The weather can change rapidly, so having extra layers is a good idea. That way, you can adapt to warmer or cooler conditions.
It is possible to deposit bags with personal items for use after the race at the start/finish area near Hotel Hvide Falk. Please mark your bag clearly with your name and bib number.
Although the luggage area is manned, depositing personal belongings in the area is entirely each runner’s responsibility and the Icefjord Midnight Marathon organizers are not responsible for loss or damage of personal belongings.
All transport is included as part of your Icefjord Midnight Marathon package
There is no Expo associated with the Icefjord Midnight Marathon
All finishers receive a medal and Finisher’s Certificate will be available for free download.
T-shirts are included in your “Goodie Bag”.
A small, symbolic prize is given to the winners of both distances for men and women.
As we are significantly above the Arctic Circle, participants should prepare for the day to be chilly, with an average temperature between 6 and 7°C (43 – 45°F).
Ilulissat averages about 5 days of rain in June, so there is a small chance that the race will see some rain. That said, June is known as a dry month in Greenland.

The TCS New York City Marathon is the biggest marathons in the world with over 55,000 finishers in 2024, so don’t miss out! The atmosphere alone will get you through those 42.2 kilometres.
Run alongside amateurs, professional competitors and world record holders as you weave your way through the 5 boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan, over 5 bridges and finish in the world renowned Central Park. The course is broken down as follows (description from Runners World):
Staten Island (Miles 1-2)
Not much time is spent in Staten Island: only two miles. When the race starts, runners cross the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, which offers sweeping views of the New York Harbor and skyline, including the Statue of Liberty. The first mile is an uphill climb up the bridge, while the second mile is downhill, heading off the bridge to Brooklyn.
Brooklyn (Miles 3-12)
These next 11 miles is run in the relatively flat streets of Brooklyn. Runners are able to enjoy the colourful quirks of each neighbourhood in the borough, from the trendy restaurants in Park Slope to the charming tree-lined streets on Lafayette Avenue to the lively crowds in Williamsburg.
Queens (Miles 13-15)
Near the midpoint of the race, comes the Queensboro Bridge at mile 14. While the vantage point offers beautiful views, the climb up the bridge is tough, and the absence of spectators on this stretch can be mentally challenging. This section is quiet compared to the rest of the race.
Manhattan Part 1 (Miles 16-18)
After descending the Queensboro Bridge onto Manhattan’s First Avenue, runners are swallowed by a swell of spectators. This is a flat, three-mile stretch.
The Bronx (Miles 19-20)
Whilst crossing into The Bronx, the crowds have thinned from First Avenue. There are bands and dancers at the Entertainment Zone at 139th and Morris Avenue.
Manhattan Part 2 (Miles 21-26.2)
The final 10K of the marathon is long and possibly painful but with the roaring crowds in the heart of the Big Apple, plus the final miles through iconic Central Park, the last push is worth it. From here it is a quick spin through Harlem and a run up Fifth Avenue, reaching the northern edge of Central Park around mile 23. The next mile is fairly flat along Fifth. Once inside Central Park around mile 24, there are a couple rolling hills. At mile 25 you’ll be surrounded by deafening crowds near Columbus Circle. Then it’s just two quick turns before the finish.
We at Travelling Fit have run the TCS New York City Marathon on many occasions and with many years of travel experience, both in organising and travelling to many amazing running destinations, so you can rest assured that you are in good hands.
Benefit from our first-hand experience by booking your Marathon travel package with us to include guaranteed TCS New York City Marathon entry, perfectly located accommodation, warm up run through Central Park, city tours, social functions and much more.
